The Carmi-White County Lady Bulldogs are in the win column for the first time this season, knocking off Lawrenceville 9-5 on Monday at Archie Brown Memorial Field.
Carmi came out aggressive from the start, jumping on the Indians for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Caroline Simmons got things going with an RBI Fielder’s Choice, and Eva Attebury followed with sacrifice fly to give the Lady Bulldogs an early 3-0 advantage.
That score held steady until the fifth inning, when Lawrenceville scratched across a run to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Lady Bulldogs broke things wide open in the bottom of the fifth, plating five runs to take firm control. Torrie Rider sparked the rally with an RBI triple, and Attebury delivered again with a triple of her own to drive in another run. Attebury later came around to score on a passed ball, and Addi Elliott capped the inning with an RBI single as Carmi stretched the lead to 8-1.
Attebury wasn’t done yet. In the sixth inning, she continued her standout performance by lacing an RBI double to score Rider, marking her fourth RBI of the game and extending the Lady Bulldog lead to 9-1 heading into the final frame.
Lawrenceville made things interesting in the seventh, pushing across four runs, but the early cushion proved to be more than enough as Carmi closed out the 9-5 victory.
In the circle, Lindsay Simmons delivered a strong outing to earn the win. She allowed just one earned run on three hits over six innings while striking out seven, keeping Lawrenceville’s offense in check for most of the afternoon.
With the win, Carmi-White County improves to 1-2 on the season and will look to keep the momentum going when they host Carterville at home on Tuesday.
