Grayville City Council Holds Rare Tuesday Morning Meeting

Grayville leaders had to move their regular Monday meeting to Tuesday morning due to a lack of a quorum available for a Monday evening gathering.  Leaders spent longer in executive session Tuesday than in open session clocking over 22 minutes behind closed doors.

Before that, commissioners heard an update from Engineer Rex Gower of Milano and Grunloh and also the January activity report from Police Chief Mason Siegel.  Siegel announced the promotion of Scott Esmon from officer to Sergeant.  Commissioner Andi Ford says she and her team are working on the budget.

After the closed session, Mayor Travis Thompson announced the council was taking Officer Logan Elliott off of probation.  He was brought on in November of 2024.

Council tabled the sale of excess property and vacating North Middle Street from Vine to Martin.

There was brief discussion surrounding a request to lower the speed limit on North Street to 20mph.

I believe, David [Kendrick] tell me if I’m wrong, you’ve looked at the ordinances and there’s nothing you’ve seen that shows the speed limit was ever changed from 20 mph.  So, there’s 25 mph signs out there and I believe used to be 30 mph signs up there.  So I don’t think there’s any action that needs to be taken other than the signs need to be taken down and changed to 20 mph.

That prompted questions about other signs throughout the municipality and that some of them may not match what the speed limit is supposed to be.

Finally, council agreed verbally to an exclusive contracting agreement for grave opening and closing with John Taylor DeLap.

Council adjourned at 9:41am.
