The snowstorm that happened last weekend put a damper on Grayville’s regularly scheduled meeting Monday forcing officials to postpone it to Friday morning. Commissioners heaped praise on city workers for their efforts to remove snow from streets and sidewalks. With no executive session and only two agenda items, the meeting began and ended in just under a dozen minutes. Of note, Grayville is now the owner of two replica Civil War cannons. One will be displayed at the Veterans Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery and the other at the memorial uptown. Commissioner Baldwin picked them up.
I went to Lawton, Oklahoma. The guy makes…it’s amazing what all they do out there. He makes the cannons there and they also are into animal sculptures made out of cast aluminum. I found him on the internet. It’s been a goal of the Veterans Memorial to get a Civil War style cannon. And these came in at a cheap enough price we were able to buy two. The reason we hadn’t bought them before was because most every cannon we ever found was $25,000.
Baldwin purchased the cannons himself earlier this month, drove to pick them up and brought them back. The city officially moved to reimburse Baldwin for the cost of the cannons which were bought for $3,400 utilizing Motel Tax funds.
Also Monday morning, though not on the agenda, we asked for a status update on the liquor ordinance discussion since it’s been talked about since early December. The Smokin’ Pig had originally requested a change to their license allowing them to begin serving liquor at 10am rather than noon. Reaction has been mixed and our question led Commissioner Andi Ford to reveal…
I was contacted by the person who originally put into motion the idea of changing that and he has now said that he would rather it not be changed after talking to several other business owners that also have liquor licenses. He said he didn’t want to cause any problems and we’re just going to drop it for right now.
Council adjourned at 8:12am and is set to reconvene on February 9th in the evening.
