City of Carmi Gets Hangars for Christmas

The City of Carmi has received an early Christmas gift.  Back in June of 1986, the City of Carmi, piloted by Mayor Lawrence Martin at the time, agreed to lease a portion of the Carmi Airport to Stan Williams for the purpose of constructing hangars on the property.  The term on that original lease was for 32 ½ years.

Nearly a decade later, in May of 1996, the lease agreement was updated for Williams to construct additional hangars and updated the lease to run through May of 2035.

On Tuesday morning, Williams expressed his wish through an ordinance proposal to terminate the lease and gift back the hangars to the city.  It’s reported there is a 90’ x 50’ hangar big enough for 3 small planes comfortably with rent being $756 per month.  Additionally, there are 11 T-hangars that are all rented and will bring in $115 per month (up from the current $85 per month fee).  Council unanimously approved the termination of the lease effective December 31st, 2025 and fresh rent money into city coffers will begin to roll in for 2026.

Council adjourned the special meeting just 6 minutes after being called to order.
