A Rice Street man is free, but facing a charge of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol following his arrest Thursday evening. It was just

after 8:30pm when an officer says he observed a 2008 Dodge Caliber driving with a headlamp out leading to a traffic stop near Plum and Sixth Street. The officer notes while talking with 54-year-old Michael French that he noticed a strong odor of alcohol emanating from inside the vehicle and the subject expressed red blood shot and watery eyes. French was offered the chance to perform field sobriety tests, but details on that have been redacted. It is noted however, the officer asked French if he would submit to a Preliminary Breath Test and French reportedly declined prompting the arrest. An inventory of the vehicle revealed two Fireball bottles, one open behind the passenger seat, the other in the driver door panel. After arrest and a 20 minute observation period, French was then asked about submitting to a Chemical Testing and French refused saying he wanted his lawyer according to the report. French would end up being released but is facing charges of DUI, Illegal Transportation of Alcohol by a driver, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle. He’s due for a first appearance in White County Court on November 25th.
