It was a very successful Independence Day celebration July 5th in Crossville. Mayor Rick Kuykendall provided some scope at Tuesday night’s Village Trustee Meeting. He says the event brought in more than $6,500. That helps offset the village’s purchase of $8,500 worth of fireworks plus an estimated $1,000 insurance policy.
Also Tuesday night, the mayor talked again about appointing Jim Smith to the Crossville Village Board but held off on officially moving forward. He says Smith’s job demands kept him from attending the meeting.
He works for a agricultural department that spreads fertilizer and stuff. Right now, it’s a busy time of year for those guys with the fields being dry. He’s going to try to make it to the next meeting. He did tell me he’s looking to retire toward the end of this year, so we have a little patience, maybe next meeting, we’ll have that conversation. He really wants to be on the board, but at this time he’s just got to work. I don’t think there’s really any issues with that. We’ll let him come back and we’ll move forward.
Village trustees will soon get new chairs. That’s an item that’s been on several agendas and discussed. Trustee Nikki Jacobs took the lead on that front and the village will get a total of 12 new chairs at a cost of about $959.
The board also heard from retired Grayville Police Chief David Burrows. He was on hand to make a presentation on behalf of PC Doctors. The village is interested in putting in security cameras and Burrows outlined options for that. In addition, he suggested switching to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) system which would help the new system pay for itself within two years. Over about thirty minutes, trustees heard options and asked questions. Rather than taking action, trustees opted to take the proposal under advisement and will take it up again at a future meeting after some rumination.
Leaders approved the creation of two new four way stops adding stop signs at Winkler and Morell as well as First and Morell intersections.
Finally, before recessing into an executive session, Crossville trustees approved Rodney Abrahamson for a building permit to extend fencing with the caveat that moving it will be at his expense if he gets into an easement.
Executive session began at 7:24pm. Leaders will next gather at 6:30pm on July 22nd.
