Local Motocrosser Drew Phipps races well in Louisiana

May 5th, 2014

15 year old Drew Phipps is back on the competitive motocross circuit this season and finished well in Kirkwood, Louisiana over the weekend.  Phipps is attempting to qualify for the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals to be held in August.  To do so, he must finish in the top 8 at an area qualifier, then within the top 6 at a regional qualifier.  He can check off the first of those in two different classes after successful rides in Kirkwood.

Phipps finished in 4th place in the Schoolboy I division, for motorbikes up to 125 cc.  He then went on to finish 2nd in the Schoolboy II class, for bikes up to 250cc.  Riders must all be under the age of 16 and though he’s 15, Phipps is allowed to race as a 14 year old because of his age at the start of the season.

Up next, Phipps racing will make the long trip to Wortham, Texas in mid-June for Regional Qualifying races where he’ll have to finish Top 6 to guarantee himself a spot in the National Final.  If he fails to qualify in the Lonestar state, he’ll have little time to dwell on it as another opportunity comes just a week later, June 21st and 22nd at Walnut in Northern Illinois.

The Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals are held July 27th through August 2nd in Tennessee.  Drew Phipps is sponsored by Sign Spot, Doug Winter Farms and Roark Trucking in Carmi; Ryno Racing of Fairfield and JM Racing Suspension in Sainte Marie, Illinois.
