Dennis Ray Maurer - Tacoma, WA 2/6

Dennis Ray Maurer, age 74, of Tacoma, WA, passed away February 4, 2012, in Washington. He was born June 2, 1937, in Carmi, the son of Raymond G. and Moudine (Bloodworth) Maurer. He was an Air Force veteran. He had attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church and the Church of Christ.

He is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Clyde Edwin and Evon Maurer and Ronald Lee Maurer, all of Carmi.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Carolyn McGhee - Norris City 2/4

Carolyn McGhee, 73, of Norris City passed away Friday, February 3, 2012 at 1:48 am at Phoenix Rehab and Nursing in Carmi, IL. She was born June 8, 1938 in Hamilton County, IL, the daughter of Leland Harrell and Harriett Ellen (Wheeler) Wheeler. Carolyn married Frank McGhee on May 14, 1954 and he preceded her in death on January 17, 2003. She was a homemaker.

Carolyn is survived by a daugher and son-in-law, Roxane and Dan Eck of Springerton; a brother, Gary Lee Wheeler of Norris City, IL; a sister, Helen McGhee of Enfield, IL; three grandchildren, Amy Ellison and her husband, Kevin, Danielle Short and her husband, Heath and Ryan Eck and his wife, Lacy; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Clotine Flannigan and Gail Rodgers and three brothers, Harold Eugene Jordan, Bertis Wheeler and Marvin Wheeler.

Funeral services for Carolyn McGhee, 73, of Norris City, will be Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City with Rev. Randy Plunkett officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery in Broughton, Friends may call on Sunday after 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

A 82 year old resident of McLeansboro Barbara Jean Abbott died on Thursday at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro

She is survived by; Her Husband, William "Bill" Abbott; 3 Daughters and 2 Sons in Law, Pamela and Barry Flannigan of McLeansboro, Martha and Ron Immel of Carmi, Barbara Lynn of Oscala, FL; 1 Son and Daughter in Law, John and Sharon Abbott of McLeansboro; 6 Grandchildren; 3 Great Grandchildren.

Caleb E. Risley - Wrentham, MA 2/2

Caleb E. Risley, 38, died January 19, 2012, in Wren­tham, Massachusetts. He was the son of Edward and Jane (Sullivan) Risley. He was a medical technician. Survived by parents; ex wife Tresa Clark; sons Cole and Trent; daughter Kyra; brother Nathan. Visitation 10 am Saturday at Cook Fu­neral Chapel in Crossville. Newton Smith Armstrong - Carmi 2/2

Newton Smith Armstrong, 99, of Carmi, formerly of Crossville, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. He was known as a quiet and gentle man. Born October 11, 1912, to Huston and Ethel (Smith) Armstrong in Phillips Township, Crossville, Illinois, he attended Groves one-room school and graduated from Crossville High School in 1931.

Smith was a farmer most of his life except during the years of World War II where he worked in California and then Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for Pacific Naval Air Contractor building underground fuel storage for ships and submarines. He was underground the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. Following the war, he returned to Crossville and farming in 1946. He was also a survivor of the notorious tornado of 1925.

In 1948, he married Wilma Stanley Covert, and she preceded him in death in 1996. Smith later married Mary Lou Lamp in 2003, a long-time friend of the family and she survives.

Mr. Armstrong loved farming and was very meticulous about every field being manicured. He always kept a pen and paper in his pocket to jot down what needed to be done. He was proud of his birth date: 10-11-12, and lived to be the oldest of his Armstrong generation. Smith always enjoyed attending his high school alumni dinners and spending 30 winters in his home in Fort Myers, Florida.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Carmi, and member of the White County Farm Bureau. Playing cards, eating out, and being with friends and family were a big part of his life.

Survivors include wife Mary Lou Armstrong; son Stanley W. (Nancy) Armstrong, all of Carmi; daughter Peggy J. (Travis) Wake of Centerville, Indiana; brothers Edward (Mary Ann) Armstrong of Springfield, Illinois, and James (Sue) Armstrong of Crossville; former daughter-in-law Linda Langford of Draffenville, Kentucky; sister-in-law Janet Armstrong of Carmi; brother-in-law Kenneth (UDean) Paul of Carmi; grandchildren Vicki Jones, Shelly Newman, Jill Armstrong, Brian Atteberry, Doug Armstrong, Scott Wake; stepsons Ronald W. (Hyla) Lamp and Richard (Roxie) Lamp; step daughter Diana Lamp; step grandchildren Kelly Kelsheimer, Erica Summers, Lindsay Rouse and Holly Lamp; nine great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 48 years, Wilma Armstrong; son Gary C. Armstrong; sister Wanda Armstrong Juenger; and brother Robert W. Armstrong.

Visitation is 4-7 pm, Saturday, February 4, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Funeral is at 1:30 pm, Sunday, February 5, at Cook Funeral Chapel with burial in Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Carmi.

Pearl Taylor - Crossville 2/1

Pearl Taylor, 94, of Crossville, Illinois, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. She was born September 21, 1917, in Livingston, Tennessee, the daughter of Wesley and Stella (Vann) Taylor. She married Ausby Taylor on August 9, 1935, and he preceded her in death on June 29, 1975.

She was a homemaker and member of the Church of Christ. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bingo. Preparing Sunday dinners for her family was one of her favorite activities.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy (Gloria) Taylor of McMinnville, Tennessee, and Shirley Taylor of Crossville; seven daughters, Nola Guinn, Billie (Byrl) Mullins, all of Crossville, Barbara (Larry) Fleck of Carmi, Linda (Stephen) Chambers of Holland, Indiana, Carolyn Hammond of Crossville, Cathy (Brian) Schmidt of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, LaVonda (Jerry) Tate of Effingham; brother Raymond (Elise) Taylor of Cookeville, Tennessee; two sisters, Leoria (Shirley) Reagan of Chesterfield, Indiana, Ruby Dean (J.B.) Smith of Livingston; 36 grandchildren; 84 great grandchildren; and 17 great great grandchildren.

Pearl is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Jack and Kenneth Taylor; three sons in law, Tom Hammond, Samuel Guinn and Raymond Carr; four sisters, Mae Harvey, Murl Conner, Erma Reagan, Corine Kennedy; grandson Michael Guinn; granddaughter Rita Fay Taylor.

Vera Irene Yates - Carmi 2/1

Vera Irene Yates, age 95, of Carmi, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was born in Maunie, IL, on June 12, 1916 to Clarence and Lillian (Mullen) Whitlow. She married Earl Yates Nov. 10, 1936, and he preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1979. She was a wife, mother, and worked at Ainsbrooke Corp. until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of the Church of God.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jim Yates of Nixa, MO, and Rick and Cora Yates of Carmi; a sister, Kathryn Orrick of Carmi; a sister-in-law, Betty Whitlow of McLeansboro; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and many special friends at Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

She is preceded in death by her husband Earl; her parents; two sisters, Loretta Whitlow and Marilyn Cobb; and two brothers, Cyril Whitlow and Leon Whitlow.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, February 3, 2012, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Mariah Marie Smith Carmi - 1/31

Mariah Marie Smith, of Carmi, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012, at Heartland Regional Health Care in Marion, IL. She is the daughter of Tabitha Hunsinger and Andrew Smith, both of Carmi.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Hayden Smith; two sisters, Payten Harris and Charley James; two grandmothers, Anna Smith and Linda Hunsinger; a grandfather, Chuck Hunsinger; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by four great-grandparents; a grandparent; and a cousin, McKenzie Smith.

A 93 year old resident of Belle Rive, Henry A. Overbey died on Saturday at 1:25 am at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.

He is survived by: 3 Sons and Daughters In Law, Earnest and Barbara Overbey of Opdyke, Albert and Beverly Overbey and Henry and Sharon Overbey all of Mt. Vernon, IL; A Daughter Lorene Overbey of Belle Rive; 9 Grandchildren; 15 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandchildren.

David G Midkiff - Norris City 1/29

David G. Midkiff, 65, of Norris City passed away January 29, 2012 at 11:20 a.m. at his residence. He was born January 1, 1947 in Norris City, IL the son of Leamon and Adella (Hendrix) Midkiff. David married Trina Marie Zook on June 8, 1974. He retired as a railroad contractor and had previously been a salesmen and plant manager with Athenia Plastics. David joined the U.S. Navy on June 28, 1965 and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on June 28, 1969. He was a member of Norris City Christian Church.

David is survived by his wife of 37 years, Trina of Norris City; a daughter and son-in-law, Trina Adel and Beau Sturm of Revere, MA; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Troy David and Felicia Midkiff of Beverly, MA and Adam Jacob Midkiff of San Antonio, TX; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Esther Coupel and Dana and Bill Smith all of Norris City, Virginia Remes of Virginia Beach, VA and Faye and Gary Thomas of Harrisburg, IL; a brother and a sister-in-law, Denver and "Choco" Midkiff of Seattle, WA; and two grandchildren, John David and Violet Adella Midkiff.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest, Ozna, Thomas and James Midkiff.

Kenneth E. Seitz-Carmi 1/29

Kenneth E. Seitz, 83, of Carmi, Illinois, died Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born November 19, 1928, in Carmi, the son of Walter and Eva (Hutchcraft) Seitz. He married Floella Sailer on June 4, 1949, and she survives.

Kenny was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi. He was a farmer and a farm equipment mechanic. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and discussing the issues of the day at the Motel Coffee Shop.

Survivors include his wife, Floella Seitz of Carmi; son John R. Seitz and his wife Susan of South Haven, Michigan; daughters Sandra Williams and her husband Charles of Carrier Mills, Illinois, and Jeanie Spielman and her husband Terry of Pecatonica, Illinois; son-in-law Jerry Crockett and his wife Carolyn; brother Don Seitz and his wife Carolyn; sister Marilyn Westfall and her husband Jon all of Carmi; grandchildren John David Crockett and his wife Courtney, Nicholas Williams and his wife Richelle, Erin Williams, and Johnna Bither and her husband Nick; great grandchildren Lucas, Sophia and Brodie Crockett.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Seitz.

Visitation is 5-7 pm, Thursday, February 2 at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Funeral is at 10:30 am, Friday, February 3 at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Burial will be in White County Memorial Gardens near Carmi.

James R. "Jim" Brown Carmi - 1/27

James R. "Jim" Brown, age 82, longtime resident of Carmi died peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Maunie on August 20, 1929 to the late Harry & Iona (Wooten) Brown. He graduated from Carmi High School and then served his country in the Army. On June 16, 1957 he married the former Dorothy (Brooks) Brown who survives. Jim worked for over 50 years in the oil fields as a driller. For his pastimes, he love to do crossword puzzles, was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, loved to be around his family, collected coins and hats and enjoyed his little dog, Tiki. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Carmi, 2 sons, Stan (Pam) of Brownsville, Stacey (Michelle) of Carmi, 2 daughters, Katy of Carmi and Lisa (Jeff) of Evansville, In. 7 Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren along with 3 brothers, Jerry (Sarah) of Huntsville, AL, Larry (Cathy) of Carmi, and John of Enfield. 1 sister, Gayle of Louisville, Ky. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Per his request, Jim will be cremated and a graveside service will be on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at the Big Prairie Cemetery South East of Carmi at 2:00 PM. Those wanting to attend should go directly to the cemetery.

Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway is entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Southern Illinois Hospice in his memory.
